Jack’s Birthday

Jack has had a GREAT birthday, well, WEEK. We started the celebration on the Saturday before his birthday. He wanted to do his birthday breakfast on Saturday so he could go to the donut shop and pick out his donuts, and so we wouldn’t have to rush before school.

After breakfast, we headed to his birthday surprise-an indoor skate park!! We went to Rocket Town in Nashville. They have kids only skate on Saturday mornings, so we thought it would be the perfect time for Jack to go for the first time. He LOVED it. He was in absolute heaven. He tried all his toys, but settled in on his scooter for the majority of the time. He skated HARD for 3 hours straight, and tried all the different ramps. Josie was more hesitant, but ended up having fun on her roller blades, too.

And here!

After we got done at the skate park, we got his requested Mexican food for lunch- he wanted a cheese quesadilla and cheese dip, and then we headed to Grammy and Pappy’s for the evening. They gave him a BB gun for his birthday! So of course he had to go try it out. πŸ™‚

His actual birthday was on Monday, which was a school day. He requested regular oatmeal that he could “decorate” with toppings for his birthday breakfast, so that’s what he got! He also took donuts to share with his class at lunchtime. That night, Mee Maw cooked his requested birthday dinner: fried chicken, fried okra, sweet potatoes, and biscuits! She loves him, just a bit. πŸ™‚

This Saturday was a day he had been counting down to for a LONG time. In lieu of a friend party, he decided that he just wanted to invite his two best friends, so that they could stay all day. So they got to our house about 10:30, and I didn’t take them home until after dinner. They had the BEST time, just playing and laughing, exploring, and watching a movie. They ate chicken wraps for lunch, had hot chocolate after exploring at the farm, and had for dinner had hamburgers with brownies and ice cream for dessert. All Jack’s ideas. It was his perfect play date. πŸ™‚

I would say he has celebrated pretty hard! Happy Birthday Jack!!

Eight Years Old

Dear Jack,

Last night when I was tucking you in bed, you said, “I can’t believe my birthday has gotten here so quickly!” Well buddy, ME TOO. It literally seems like yesterday I was dropping you off at Nana’s in the mornings before school, and you were saying “My not know” and “Hers is my fwiend.” But bud, you are EIGHT years old. Eight always seems so big to me, because I think that is where most of my childhood memories start. Eight has seemed like a big deal to you, too. You have been more excited for this birthday than any other. Here’s some things I want to remember about you right now:

-You are tiny, tiny. The smallest one in your class by far. You have grown just a bit this year, because you have finally made it into size 6 clothes. You don’t let being small stop you from doing anything, though! And, being small doesn’t seem to bother you yet, which we are glad of.

-You are sweet and sensitive. You still cry when there are sad parts in movies. You love to cuddle. You hate to see anyone get in trouble. You don’t sleep with “sleeping buddies” anymore…but you still ALWAYS ask me to “pat-pat” you.

-You are a goober. We say, “Jack, stop making annoying sounds!” at least 1,000 times a week. You love to laugh, and you love to crack jokes, even though you are a TERRIBLE joke teller. You will do almost anything to make someone else laugh, though.

-Your best friend is Josie. Your favorite person, hands down, is Daddy. But you always want me at Β bed time and if you are sick or hurt or sad.

-You are break-dance machine.

-You NEVER stop moving. You have more energy than any kid I know. You love to have “step contests” at the end of the day, and you almost always beat us all. You are on the go ALWAYS.

-You love to be outside. Some of your favorite things to do: make forts in the woods, dig in the dirt, climb trees, play basketball or soccer, run laps, ride your bike, roller blade, jump ramps on your scooter, hiking, exploring new places.

-Camping, hands down, your favorite place to be. You learned to kneeboard really well this year-you can even cross the wake!

-Some of your favorite indoor activities: BOARD GAMES, playing on the Switch or the Wii, playing make-believe with Josie, reading, snuggling, having family movie nights, playing “catch”, trains, cars

-Favorite movies/tv shows: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Ninja Turtles, Marvel Movies, Harry Potter

-You are reading so much better now than at this time last year! You are doing well in school. Your sloppy handwriting has been redeemed by learning cursive! Your cursive is SO much nicer than your print. You love your classmates. Your best friends are Finn and Bo. You still are in speech class, and you are on your second year of mandolin lessons.

-Favorite foods: Chinese food, donuts, Chic-Fil-A, sweet potatoes, sausage and biscuits, muffins, oatmeal, root beer, mandarin oranges, bagels with cream cheese, cinnamon rolls, fried chicken, fried okra. You also have a new found love for salad! You are good eater, and will try anything at least once.

As much as I wish I could, I can’t capture just what you’re like in a blog post. But you are awesome, and our family just wouldn’t be the same without you! We love you BIG, buddy. Happy birthday!!

Whew! What a week.

This week was a LONG week. It was COLD, and we had a “tease” of a couple of snow days that didn’t come. We started out the week with some fun, going to Golly G’s for a treat on Sunday night, just because.

And then, Monday morning, is where it started to go downhill a bit….Jack woke up with a fever, feeling crummy. He had blisters on his throat, so I assumed strep. He stayed home with Jake, and Jo and I headed to school. I left school early so I could take him to the doctor in the afternoon. Poor thing did NOT have strep….he had the flu. πŸ™ He was one miserable dude on Monday. Tuesday, though, he did not have a fever, but was still not quite back to normal. He stayed home with Jake again, and I left school early again so Jake could go coach soccer. Wednesday it was my turn to stay home with the little man, and I spent the whole day getting him caught up on make up work and cleaning and disinfecting the house, top to bottom!

Thursday we all went to school together, and had a pretty normal day.

Friday we all went to school….and then Josie went down with a fever after chapel. :/ Jake was able to come get her, and so she went home for the day. I didn’t take her to the doctor, because after talking to her doctor, we assumed she probably had the same thing Jack did. She had fever all day Friday, and part of the day Saturday. Saturday was a beautiful day, and Jake and I took turns running some errands so Jo could rest on the couch.

Today was a BEAUTIFUL sunny, 64 degree day in February. You have to take advantage of days like that! Jake went to church while I stayed home with Jo. Jack went to church with Ta and Tommy and then went to a Vandy game with Shshr, Ta, and Everett.

After Jake got home from church, Josie, Jake, and I decided to go over to the farm for a picnic lunch. Josie was feeling much better, and we figured the fresh air would do her good. We roasted hot dogs Β and sat by the fire, hiked a bit, and chopped up some logs that were across our path.

It was a great ending to a kind of not-great week.

Tonight we picked up yummy Greek food and watched the Super Bowl while getting ready for the week ahead. We are PRAYING that nobody else gets sick this week!
